Inventory List

Ever wonder what to take for a 5-week long road trip? Well we certainly did! Since we are doing a lot of camping we found a pre-made checklist by REI very helpful. However, we will be traveling from place to place, and sometimes staying in hotels. So we had to consider that also. We had to forgo some things for now (ice, meat, cheeses, etc) since we will be in hotels for the first few nights.

So without further ado, we present to you the Dietz™ List of Road Trip Survival Must-Haves.  We don’t leave until tomorrow so if you see anything we are missing, there is still time!!

Everything has been organized and sorted into clear plastic tote bins. The neighbors have been alerted and agreed to check on the house. Mail has been stopped. A willing student has agreed to cut our grass. Perishable food items in the house have been thrown away. Laundry has been done. I guess all we have to do now is finish packing and load up the truck!

  1. Totally up to you, but if you’re trying to save room, a few thoughts:
    – If you fill the tank when you get to 3/8 and before entering national parks, you won’t need to carry any gas. It’s true that gas is expensive in national parks but they can all be crossed on a full tank, and gas can usually be procured for like $6/gallon at the camp stores if it’s an emergency. (I knew a guy in high school who set his car on fire carrying gas improperly so maybe I’m overcautious.)
    – If your coolant system is topped up when you leave and your car is less than 15 years old, I’d be surprised if the coolant gets meaningfully low during your entire trip — so hopefully you don’t need the coolant. If you do, they sell it everywhere.
    – Dish soap is an excellent substitute for every other kind of soap.

One thing you probably have but which would be very useful if you don’t: tire gauge (not an expensive one, but one of the $1 jobbers they sell at the gas station).
Also: when you find yourself in hot climates, do be sure to carry two gallons of water. Not that you’ll need that for most of the trip of course…
